Tafraoute's market is held on Tuesday and Wednesday and often has a good selection of woven palm-frond baskets, argan oil, and amalou (almond and argan paste). Tafraoute is the place to come for mountain babouches (slippers). These are different from the slip-on varieties found in the souks of Marrakesh and Fez, as they are specially made with a heel covering to aid mountain walking. Take note of Berber babouche color-coding: yellow for men, red for women, pompoms for unmarried girls, and spangled designs only for special occasions. The traditional local women’s dress is a large black piece of fabric with braiding or embroidery at the edges. These can easily be converted into soft furnishings such as table cloths or curtains.
With a great range of carpets and other artisanal goods, this place is worth a visit if you feel the need for souvenirs. Although the area isn't well-known for carpet making, Mohammed and his team are happy to explain the different types of rugs from various regions.
Not to be confused with the excellent Maison Traditionelle museum in Oumesnat, the Maison Touareg is a bazaar, carrying a nice selection of regional Amazigh carpets.
