Packing
If you're visiting the mountains and the caverns of Virginia, prepare for colder-than-average temperatures. Hiking along the Appalachian Trail, even in spring and fall, frequently requires a coat.
Where dress is concerned, Washington, Baltimore, and Richmond are relatively conservative. In the more expensive restaurants men are expected to wear a jacket and tie.
At the Bay and ocean resorts, "formal" means long trousers and a collared shirt for men, and shoes for everybody. A tie might never get tied during a stay in these areas.
