Andrew Pinckney Inn

40 Pinckney St. 29401, United States, Charleston, South Carolina 29401, United States

Why We Like It

Tucked just off the City Market, you’ll have easy access to carriage rides and souvenir shopping and are a short stroll to the picture-perfect South of Broad neighborhood, where you can meander for hours without getting bored. Rooms are comfortable enough and during off-seasons rates can be quite affordable given the inn’s prime location.

Fodor's Expert Review

A charming, cheery yellow façade welcomes you to the Andrew Pinckney Inn, which is situated just a block north of Charleston’s historic City Market—one of the nation’s oldest public markets and the epicenter of the city’s tourism scene. While on-site amenities are limited, the hotel offers stellar specialty packages (like a “Charleston On Tap” package that includes a tour of local breweries) and partners with local restaurants to offer dining discounts. Most rooms sleep two or four, though townhouse suites can fit the whole family.

You Should Know The Pinckney building, which boasts the inn’s famed colorful exterior, is only half the inn, housing the lobby and a few suites. Most guest rooms, along with the breakfast space, are located across the street in the less flashy Church Street building.

Room

Guest rooms are small but not cramped and clad in British West Indies décor and basic furnishings. Three two-floor Townhouse Suites offer a spacious first-floor living room (with a pullout sofa), fridge, and large bedroom, while the romantic St. Philip Suite is sought-after for its private balcony, extra space, and exposed brick.

Tip The Cotesworth Suite is also roomy. Another perk? It’s awash in natural light, more so than are other rooms throughout the property.

Bathroom

The bathroom’s a bathroom, but it’s got everything you need—plus a handy hairdryer, terrycloth robes, and satisfying Gilchrist and Soames products.

Lobby

You may swing by for tea, coffee, or flavored water (the refreshments are left out during the day); otherwise, you’ll likely only visit the handsome lobby at check-in. In the Church Street building, an atrium with comfy chairs centers the space.

You Should Know Throughout the inn, décor feels somewhat dated. However, renovations have already started to freshen the space in 2018.

Gym

Though there’s no facility on site, guests have complimentary access to Pivotal Fitness (7-minute walk).

Dining

Fresh baked pastries and other continental breakfast delicacies are whipped up daily and served on the Church Street building’s rooftop terrace. With heaters and an awning, you can sit and savor the view of nearby steeples year-round. Also, coffee, tea, and homemade cookies are set out in the early afternoon.

Drinking

Return to the rooftop terrace between 4 and 5 p.m. for a daily wine reception.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Parking around the Charleston City Market is hard to come by (and pricey) so valeting your car ($25/night) is your best bet. Set out from the hotel on foot, hail a pedicab, or consider a horse-drawn carriage ride for downtown sightseeing. Drive or ride-share your way off the peninsula.

Restaurants

Within a five-minute-walk radius are 5Church (5-minute walk), a solid lunch, brunch, and dinner eatery housed in a former church; Cru Café (2-minute walk), one of the tastiest lunch spots in the city (try to snag a table on the porch); and Hank’s Seafood Restaurant (2-minute walk), which serves up delectable seafood suppers.

Bars

Try The Griffon (10-minute walk) for a pint in a watering hole frequented by locals. Fancy a fancier tipple? Grab a cocktail at the rooftop Pavilion Bar (6-minute walk) atop the nearby Market Pavilion Hotel. Finish the night off with a dessert martini from Kaminsky’s Dessert Café (3-minute walk).
