Fodor's Expert Review
Stand in the driveway of the Battery Carriage House Inn and you’ll be gazing out onto White Point Garden, with the Charleston Harbor just beyond. The cozy bed and breakfast—housed, as its name suggests, in the carriage house tucked behind a Battery manse built in 1843—offers simple lodging. a light breakfast, pleasant courtyard, and killer South of Broad location.
You Should Know Some suites are said to be haunted, such as room number eight, where “The Headless Torso” is rumored to roam. In fact, the inn offers a Ghost Adventure Package that attracts spirit hunters from around the world.

Room
Guest rooms—which you enter motel-style—are clad in 1800s period reproductions (think four-poster beds, heavy wooden armoires) and bold, of-the-era wall colors and drapes. Choose between standard queen or king rooms, or the ground-level suite, located beneath the porch of the main house.
Bathroom
Bathrooms are small but sufficient. Some hold a walk-in shower with a sliding glass door, others, a shower-tub combo.
Lobby
A petite lobby with a striking original fireplace welcomes you to the historic property. Plush sofas and local magazines invite you to sit and stay a while.
Dining
Coffee and a light continental breakfast are served in the lobby.
Tip We suggest taking your food outside and dining beneath the well-maintained courtyard’s pergola.
Drinking
At 5:30 p.m., a wine-and-cheese reception held in the lobby encourages mingling with fellow travelers.
