Fodor's Expert Review

If bed-and-breakfasts are your style, you won’t find a place better to stay in Portland than Lion and the Rose Victorian B&B Inn. This 8-room inn, housed in a Victorian-style mansion equal parts charming and historic (without sacrificing the modern amenities you’d find in a larger, more traditional hotel).

Room

Each of the rooms at Lion and the Rose Victorian B&B Inn is impeccably decorated and features a variety of Victorian-style touches, like four-poster beds, floral wallpaper, and original antique light fixtures.

Bathroom

Each room has a private bathroom stocked with fluffy robes and Turkish towels.

Tip If you want a real Victorian-era experience, book the Avandel or Garden rooms, which feature a clawfoot tub.

Lobby

There’s no lobby, but the mansion does have two Victorian parlors with plenty of plush seating for you to kick back and relax (preferably with a cup of tea).

Dining

Lion and the Rose Victorian B&B Inn offers a fantastic hot breakfast (it is a bed-and-breakfast, after all) featuring eggs, pastry, fruit, and other breakfast staples. You can also stop by “Grandma’s Treat Table” and pick up complimentary cookies, candy, and pretzels throughout your stay.

Drinking

There’s no alcohol on-site, but they do offer complimentary tea, spring water, and juice.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

There’s plenty of public transportation in the neighborhood (it takes between 10 and 15 minutes on foot to get to the nearest MAX station), and if you do bring a car, there’s free street parking.

Restaurants

Milo’s City Cafe (3-minute walk) is a brunch spot that’s a favorite with locals thanks to its relaxed, diner-like atmosphere and extensive menu of breakfast staples with a twist (like the Blackstone Benedict, an eggs benedict dish with pepper bacon, tomato, and hollandaise sauce). If the weather’s nice, try Rose & Thistle (10-minute walk), a pub that serves both American (think burgers) and Scottish (think Scotch egg) fare with an awesome outdoor patio.

Bars

For happy hour (or “jolly hour,” as they call it), head to Swift Lounge (6-minute walk), an always lively spot where you can score a killer sangria for $3. For a beer, try McMenamins Broadway Pub (2-minute walk), where you can sample local beers on tap while you mingle with the regulars.
