Flathead Lake

The 370-foot-deep Flathead Lake, with 180 miles of shoreline, is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States. It’s a wonderful—and popular—place for sailing, fishing, camping and swimming. Wildhorse Island State Park is home to bighorn sheep and other wildlife; the 2,165-acre island can be reached only by boat, which can be rented. Cherry groves line the lake’s shores, and toward the end of July farmers harvest them and sell cherries at roadside stands along the two highways that encircle the lake.
