Fodor's Expert Review Normaway Inn and Cabins
691 Egypt Rd., Margaree Harbour, Nova Scotia, B0E 2C0, Canada
Set on 500 acres in the Margaree Valley, this inn has rooms full of country character, hiking trails on the doorstep, and a music venue in a converted barn that rings with the sound of live traditional music from top Cape Breton fiddlers; performers sometimes play "unplugged" in the parlor, too. Many rooms and cabins have woodstoves and private screened porches. The dining room makes use of local ingredients—lamb raised here, just-caught salmon, and vegetables from the inn's garden.
PROS
- bucolic setting
- central to island touring loops
- delicious, locally sourced food
CONS
- not luxurious (but doesn't aspire to be)
- about 25-minute drive from Margaree Harbour
- some rooms are tucked in under the roof
