Fodor's Expert Review Gran Hotel de la Ciudad de México
Av. 16 de Septiembre 82, Mexico City, Mexico City, 06000, Mexico
Ensconced in a former 19th-century department store, this hotel in the very center of the city has rooms furnished in an updated traditional style with floral bedspreads, stately brass-tack furnishings, and modern striped wall coverings. The distinctive belle epoque lobby—with a striking Parisian stained-glass dome from Jacque Graber's workshop, chandeliers, gilded birdcages, and 19th-century wrought-iron elevators—is worth a visit in its own right. The Terrace breakfast restaurant overlooks the Zócalo.
PROS
- the lobby scene, complete with chirping canaries and top-hatted staff
CONS
- hotel often holds parties in lobby
- staff can be unhelpful
