Why We Like It
The modern meets mid-century design and the easy, anything goes atmosphere just feels right to us. If you want to catch up over a cup of coffee with fellow travelers you can do that, but if you’d rather just do your own thing, that’s fine too. Plus, you’re in the middle of it all, without the madness and noise that usually goes along with that.

What started as an early example of couch surfing in the 60’s has gone from hippie to hipster. Now encompassing two adjoining canal houses in a particularly picturesque part of residential Jordaan, it feels part guest house and part hip hotel, beloved by those who like meeting fellow explorers in a homey environment.
You Should Know There are not a lot of extra services–no spa, pool, gym or concierge–but the staff are approachable and ready with personal recommendations. You also won’t find a minibar in your room (reception stocks some basics), but there are coffee and tea facilities and free Wi-Fi.

Room
The ochre, black, white and grey color scheme, vintage furniture and the hotel’s antique key motif–here on a cushion, there on an enamel cup-can be found throughout, along with charming details, such as coat racks fashioned from art books, cut-out gable headboards and bed stands with integrated lighting and plugs. What’s more, almost half of the rooms overlook the beautiful Bloemgracht canal, which is so quiet that the only sound you’ll hear is the melodic chiming of church bells.
You Should Know Travelers lugging a lot of luggage may want to keep in mind that the elevator is painfully slow. Mind you, there’s not much storage space anyway, so you might want to pack light.
Bathroom
In a word: snug. But they’re well thought-out and spotlessly clean, with walk-in rain showers (no baths!) and awesome Argan products.
Lobby
Simple yet functional, with a couch, (free) candy, pens, and postcards with slogans like “A 17th century home sleeps great!” and “We’re staying below sea-level but we’re more than fine!”
Tip Like those cute outfits the staff are wearing? They’re by Dutch fashion label G-star and for sale (you also get a 20% discount at the nearby Westerstraat store). And that’s just one of many partnerships Mr. Jordaan has with local labels.
Dining
There’s no restaurant, but breakfast (€12.50), which is served in the downstairs area adjacent to the lobby, features a wide range of locally-sourced products, from cheese and charcuterie to granola and breakfast cakes.
Drinking
The downstairs area also does double-duty as a work-space and hideout for guests, who have access to free custom-blended coffee here all day (and it’s good custom-blended coffee, too!).

Getting Around
Situated in a quiet, residential canal in the picturesque Jordaan neighborhood, this hotel offers excellent access to the Western Canal Belt and the popular 9 Straatjes shopping district, without the hustle and bustle. All the important sites are within easy walking distance, but you can jump on a 13, 14 or 17 tram at Westermarkt (5-minute walk) towards Central Station or out west, south or east or catch tram 10 at Marnixstraat (4-minute walk), which runs along the perimeter of the center.
Restaurants
Bussia (6-minute walk) is one of Amsterdam’s most beloved and elegant Italian restaurants, but if it’s more casual comfort food you’re after, La Perla Pizzeria (5-minute walk), is famed for its authentic wood-burning oven Pizza Margherita, and convivial vibe. Or expand your pancake horizons at Japanese Pancake World (5-minute walk), which serves 3 styles of savory okonomiyaki.
Bars
Café ‘t Smalle (5-minute walk) has been around since the 18th century, when it was the Hoppe Distillery, and its canal-side terrace is one of the prettiest places to grab a casual beer. For well-crafted cocktails with canal views, intimate fireplace nooks and an Art Deco-style bar, you can’t go wrong at Pulitzer’s Bar (5-minute walk).
