Why We Like It
While Bauer Palazzo isn’t the flashiest nor the most sophisticated of Venice’s high-end hotels, staying here still feels like you’re in Venice, with all the period details that implies, but with an understated and relaxed vibe. Plus it’s in a fabulous location for both sightseeing and shopping—and its terrace on the Grand Canal offers unforgettably stunning views.

Set in the bustling square of Campo San Moisè, close to both Piazza San Marco and high-end shops (hello Prada and Versace), the Bauer is constructed from two joined palaces. Though the façade away from the water has a strange Soviet-style look (while the water side is very pretty, with a 1930s neo-Gothic exterior), it’s dark, moody, and atmospheric inside. The best parts: a gorgeous terrace overlooking the Grand Canal, plus the highest roof terrace in town.
You Should Know Though undoubtedly elegant, the Bauer Palazzo is also a bit old-fashioned—so if you’re looking for sleek style you may want to give it a pass.

Room
Featuring silk wallpaper, period furniture, and Murano glass chandeliers, accommodations range from cozy Superior rooms to Suites with private balconies featuring jaw-dropping views.
Tip Some rooms have views of both the canal and pretty Santa Maria Della Salute, which you can enjoy from your own private terrace. Other rooms have views of walls. So choose accordingly.
Bathroom
All bathrooms have tubs, some with Jacuzzis, and some with separate showers, too. Handmade Santa Maria degli Angeli products are organic, produced locally, and smell delicious.
Lobby
The Bauer’s lobby has a dark, masculine look, all beiges and browns, with oversized armchairs for hanging out. It’s much larger and more inviting than many other Venice hotel lobbies, perfect for plopping down after a long day of walking.
Spa
You have to take a boat to get to the spa—it’s in the Bauer’s sister hotel, the Palladio, on Giudecca Island (11 minutes away). It has all the usual treatments (massages, facials, baths), but with gorgeous water views.
Gym
Featuring Technogym cardio and weight equipment, the fitness center is small but functional.
You Should Know The gym’s only open until 8pm every night, so don’t expect to go for a post-dinner run. (Probably not the best idea anyway, right?)
Dining
Romantic De Pisis restaurant serves Venetian-Mediterranean cuisine alongside amazing canal views.
Tip Rooftop Settimo Cielo is a lovely place for breakfast or tea.

Getting Around
The San Marco Vallaresso vaporetto stops just in front of the hotel (3-minute walk), so it’s quick and easy to sail throughout town, or back to the airport. But you’re so close to Piazza San Marco, you might as well go for a short stroll.
Restaurants
Though the San Marco area has lots of crowded eateries serving mediocre fare, nearby Osteria Enoteca San Marco (2-minute walk) is a worthy exception: a sophisticated, contemporary Italian bistro with a fine selection of wines. For a splurge (though it gets mixed reviews), the refined Italian cuisine at Michelin-starred Ristorante Quadri (3-minute walk) is worth checking out. Ai Mercanti (4-minute walk), which creates inventive dishes at a reasonable price, is another nearby place to try.
Bars
Enjoy wonderful Piazza San Marco views at Caffè Florian (3-minute walk), or try a Bellini cocktail at the place it was invented, Harry’s Bar (2-minute walk). For some cicchetti (bar snacks) and wine, Enoteca al Volto (7-minute walk) is a great place to go.
