Fodor's Expert Review Das Triest

Wiedner Hauptstrasse 12, Vienna, Vienna, 1040, Austria

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Transformed by Sir Terence Conran into an ultrasleek ocean liner, this design hotel was once a postal-coach station on the route between Vienna and the Italian port city of Trieste; the original cross vaulting remains in the lounges and in some suites. Otherwise, the interior and furnishings are tasteful and subdued. In the rooms, beige-on-beige fabrics are offset by glowing pine wall-size headboards. Blue carpeting and honey-hued woods radiate elegance and comfort, and even the doorknobs feel good to the touch. The hotel also allures with an excellent Austro-Italian restaurant, Collio and a more casual Italian Bistro, al Porto. Das Triest is within easy walking distance of the city center---about a 10-minute walk from the Opera House.
