Fodor's Expert Review Hôtel de la Cocoteraie by Popinns

Av. de l'Europe, Grande-Terre, 97118, Guadeloupe

Editor's Note: This location is reported to be under new ownership and therefore this review may contain inaccuracies.

This boutique hotel's lobby, overlooking a glorious pool and with basket-weave rattan furnishings, is a study in refinement; the property faces the calm lagoon of St-François, and the hotel's chaises are on a deck that looks over the semi-private, fenced-off section of the beach. Suites have contemporary furnishings, most in a light aqua-and-white color scheme with lots of linen and antique black-and-white photos of local scenes. All have tropically furnished living rooms, dual free-form bathroom sinks, and patios. Rooms overlooking the pool, which is spanned by a bridge and decorated with Asian urns, are well priced. There is no loud animation here. Guests get a 10% discount at the St-François golf course. The in-house restaurant, La Varangue, and its Indigo beach bar are fun. Private, secure parking is a plus.

PROS

  • beachfront or poolfront rooms are both appealing
  • sophisticated clientele
  • excellent location in St-François

CONS

  • some aspects dated and in need of renovation
  • some ongoing maintenance issues
  • pool needs attention
