By Taxi

Taxis are available on well-developed islands like Tahiti and Moorea, but, like everything, they are extremely expensive. A longer cab ride can be as expensive as renting a car for the day. That being said, most taxis are clean and responsible. Most charge flat fares from the airport to hotels, but other trips are metered. Ask whether there is a special surcharge for baggage—this can often be waived with a little fast-talking. On the more remote islands, taxi service is more sporadic. Taxis may be available only from 6 [am] to 6 [pm], or the town "taxi" may actually be a well-known local with a car who shuttles tourists where they want to go. Your accommodation will often arrange airport transfers for you, so if traveling to the outlying areas, make certain you inquire with them, or at the airport.
