Fodor's Expert Review Nambitha

$$ Soweto and the South African

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Nambitha has evolved from a township restaurant catering only to African tastes into a more versatile establishment, serving mutton curry, mogodu (tripe), and marinated traditional chicken, lamb shank, and oxtail. The restaurant plays an eclectic selection of music—soul, jazz, R&B, and more traditional African—and is constantly buzzing with people. Meals are relatively inexpensive, but food is less Nambitha's strength than its busy vibe. Many locals pop in just to chat and mingle. You can't actually see Nelson Mandela's old house from this popular restaurant, which means that you're less likely to run into a tour bus.
