Secaucus as base for New York 3 days-advice

I'm staying in Secaucus to visit New York. (I was so much cheaper, hope it wast a mistake). Few questions please!

1. Is it a decent commute into Manhattan? If I stay in Manhattan until nighttime, can I still get safely back to my hotel on public transport?

2. I am arriving at Newark. Can I get from Newark to Secaucus Courtyard by train in the evening?

3. Finally, on my last day I don't fly out until evening, so I wanted to have the day in Manhattan without having to go back to Secaucus again to get my suitcase. Can I leave my case for the day somewhere near Penn Station?

And what time should I leave Penn Station for a 7pm flight at Newark on a Saturday?

thanks so much!

There are many trains from NY Penn to Seacucus Junction. I think the last one is around 1 AM. But you will still need a cab from the station to your hotel. And the Seacucus station is in the middle of nowhere.

There are 2 luggage storage places near NY Penn Station:

Luggage Keeper 357 W. 36th St (between 8th & 9th Avs) They are open from 8 AM to 11PM 212-967-0026 Price range is bteween $ and $10 per item.

Schwartz Luggage Storage 357 W. 37th St (between 8th & 9th Avs) They are open from 8 AM to 11 PM 212-290-2626 Prince range is $7-10 per item per day. They do have a per hour rate as well.

As IMDonehere mentioned NJ Transit has many trains between Secaucus Junction and NY Penn Station. The trip takes about 15 minutes and costs $4.25 one way.

You would probably want to be at Newark Airport about 2 hours (5 PM) before scheduled departure at 7 PM (to allow for screening procedures etc).

NJ Transit has Saturday scheduled trains at 4:07 PM getting to the Air train station 4:30 PM, 4:14 getting to the Airport station at 4:37 PM, 4:54 PM getting to the Airport station at 5:17 PM, 5:01 PM getting to the Airport station at 5:21 PM. There are also trains at 5:07 PM, 5:14 PM, 5:53 PM, 5:56 PM, getting to the Airport station about 20 minutes later. There are earlier (before 4 PM) and later trains but you get the idea.

AT NY Penn the tracks the train will deaprt from are announced about 10 minutes before the train is scheduled to leave. NJ Transit trains that stop at the Airport station are indicated on the various departure boards by an 'airplane' symbol.

Keep in mind that once you get to the Airport train station you still have to take the AirTrain (monorail) to your terminal at Newark.

The one-way train fare is $13.00 from NY Penn which includes the NJ Transit fare and the AirTrain fee.

If you are staying at Court Secaucus Meadowlands, then this link will show you transport options.

There are New Jersey Trsnsit buses that stop close to the hotel. The ride from there to Manhattan could be quick, or could be the usual Lincoln Tunnel nightmare.

If you look on google maps it shows NJ transit bus #320 goes directly from The Port Authority bus terminal in NYC to very close to your hotel.

It looks like the 320 bus runs every 30 to 45min all night, until 2am.

You better hope it is not raining or cold waiting for a bus, for 40 minutes. And if you think Penn Station is a Third World facility, it makes the Port Authority look like the airport in Singapore.

I am guessing that you have a pre paid discounted rate for your hotel in Secaucus.
This commuting from Sacausus can be done but, for the future, stay in Manhattan, saving money on transportation and much in valuable time.
