Driving Prague to Zurich to Amsterdam w/ 2 toddlers

We are a Colombian/American couple in our early 40's traveling with two young rambunctious boys who are 4 and 2.

This is the end of our RTW trip and we have decided to fly into Prague from Montenego and drive to Switzerland and then Amsterdam. (rented a car already) We arrive in Prague at the end of July and will have about 30 days to complete the trip.

We are thinking of picking 3 or 4 places and stay for around 5-7 nights in each place so that we have a base, rather then moving every few days. We have no plans or places to visit and would love to hear any ideas of towns, places, etc we can go that would be interesting.

We do not necessarily need super kid friendly places, such as theme parks, zoos, etc and won't be camping (we love camping but just don't want to add more work to our travels).

Thank you so much in advance! We welcome all tips and ideas

Roberto

Hi Roberto RTW? Release To Web?

Areas you might like along that route

Lake Constance, with gardens, aquarium, zepplin museum etc etc, cycling and skating route all the way around

Alsace wine district (really pretty old houses with large vinyards out back)

Mosel, a narrow cliff sided river with a bike track and walking routes along it and lots of vinyards

Also the bit between Munich and Prague (I don't know it that well)

Thanks Billboburgler very much for the quick response. The RTW is Round the World ... work for the school district, so I took a year off to be with the family and see the world. Crazy, hectic, but amazing!

Thanks again for the tips as they sound great and I will look them up as we start to plan the end of our trip back to NYC!

Take care!

Hi Roberto- Here is my take for the end of your RTW trip.

5 Nights Prague (If you do a day trip to Cesky Krumlov use a bus tour instead of driving)

5 Nights Munich (Stay on outskirts to avoid traffic and use the S or U Bahn into Munich downtown) Several day trip possibilities are Herren Chiemsee and Salzburg

3-4 Nights Fussen or Schwangau (Schloss Neuschwanstein/ Hohenschwangau and Tegelbahn)

5 Nights Bernese Oberland - Interlaken or Grindelwald- Swiss Alps

7 Nights between Boppard (Rhine river)and Cochem (Mosel River) Many castles and river trips. You could stop in Strasbourg or Heidelberg which are on your way between Interlaken and Boppard for 2-3 nights if river trips and old castles are not your thing for a week.

5 Nights Amsterdam

Have a great trip!!!

Thanks so much as I really appreciate an itinerary that is straightforward and easy... so this way it looks like we will have a "home" spot where we can do day trips, etc.

The only difference is we probably will do 3 nights in Prague as we pick up the car rental ($900 for the 28 nights including drop off) that day, so will probably get out of Prague after that. Also, 5 nights in Amsterdam might be cut to 3 since we have been.

Just curious if we had the extra 5/6 would you increase your days elsewhere or one of the places you mentioned.

Thanks again,
Roberto

If I had that much time, I’d probably first stop in southern Czech Republic for a few days, such as basing around Ceske Budejovice. You could then visit Cesky Krumlov and Tabor from there by day trips, as well as seeing CB itself. So maybe 4 days. Then, you aren’t going that much out of your way to go down through Linz if you want and then to Salzburg and then over to Munich. You could easily spend another 5 days or so on that Austria leg. You could base yourself around Salzburg on the outskirts (and forget Linz, I just think it’s on the route). That would use up the extra time you seem to have.

Something like this would be a good itinerary giving you a variety of activities, interesting destinations, en route stops, and day trip possibilities.

Munich offers a fine roster of fun, historic, and cultural sights. Day trips such as Rothenburg,Salzburg,Ludwig castles.

Lindau is an idyllic resort on the Bodensee(Lake Constance) Germany's largest lake. A picture postcard medieval Altstadt. All kinds of lake activities. Nearby Switzerland can be visited as a day trip-Stein am Rhein and Rhine Falls
(not a Niagara). The islands of Mainau and Reichenau also make a good day trip.

Grindelwald, the "glacier village", is a Swiss alpine village in the Bernese Oberland arguably the most beautiful part of the Alps that extend from Austria to France.South of Interlaken are over 5 lakes, many waterfalls, 18 peaks over 10,000 feet. Steamers on the lakes. Mountain trains, cableways, funiculars take you high into the mountains where you can walk, hike, or just relax. Also you can make driving day trips over mountain passes or to nearby lakes and cities. I especially like the drive to Chateau Chillon in French Switzerland.

Obernai is a picturesque town in the Alsace region of France. Why not a touch of France on your travels. An alternate would be the Black Forest region of Germany, perhaps Gengenbach.Day trips to medieval hamlets, some with half-timbered houses and cobbled stone streets.Eguisheim, Riquewihr,Ribeauville, and Kayserberg fit the bill. Point out the storks on the chimneys to the boys. Another day trip to nearby Koenigsbourg (castle). Colmar and Strasboug can be visited. As can the Black Forest. A highlight for the boys may be Europa-Park.

Boppard is the next stop.Visit the castles and towns of the Mosel and Rhine valleys. Boppart is centrally located for visiting both the Mosel and the Rhine valleys.

Then

3 nights Prague (Start)

6 nights Munich (3hr33min,382km) (Regensburg en route)

4 nights Lindau im Bodensee (1hr53min,181km)

6 nights Grindelwald (3hr17min,280km) (Lucerne en route)

5 nights Obernai,France (2hr59min,279km)

4 nights Boppard (2hr49min,274km) (Heidelberg en route)

3 nights Amsterdam (3hr31min,365km)
