Dinner attire for Alaska Cruise
We are booked on an Alaskan cruise aboard the Coral Princess in July. We cannot find any information on dining attire specific to Princess Alaskan cruises. We've heard that things are a bit more casual on the Alaskan cruises. Can anyone tell me if people dress very formally for the formal nights (I think there will be 2). Would the men in our party feel comfortable in sports jackets with ties or do they need to bring suits or rent tuxes onboard?. Any other tips on dressing for ship time on this Alaskan cruise. Thanks!

Simply answer, yes!
July daytime temps in Alaska average in the low 60's F. but on occasion can reach high 70's F. or even low 80's F. so best to dress in layers. FYI - each evening you'll be given a "weather forecast" for the following day so just dress accordingly.

Alaska tends to be more casual than other areas. The stated policy when we went was "smart casual" for the dining room. I thought this meant no jeans etc. but I saw folks in jeans and no one batted an eye. Many of the guys had sport coats, but some did not and many did not wear neck ties.

Are you looking at the Princess website?
"When formal nights are held, please observe the dress code in the Traditional Dining and Anytime Dining venues for the enjoyment of all our guests.
Evening gowns and cocktail dresses for women
Tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits with a tie for men
For more info look under FAQ.

The gap between what is mentioned in the guidelines and how people actually dress and is accepted is getting wider and wider.
Personally I think either revise the dress code or enforce it but now it's bordering on being ridiculous.

It has been about 6 years, but we were on the same ship for Alaska cruise. Ignore the brochures and on-line photos. These are elegant models. We have done a number of warm-water cruises and found Alaska much more casual.
Adult pants and shoes, shirt with a collar, tie and some sort of jacket works for men. For women, non-sneaker/non-hiking shoes, and from there general office wear is fine. Some women chose to dress up a lot, but they were in the minority.

Most recently, a long sleeve shirt, no tie was acceptable in the dining room for formal night for men. With the ladies, almost anything go. I have yet to see people turned away except those wearing shorts and flip flops on formal nights.
In the "old days", the Maitre'd would have spare jackets and ties available. This has not been the case for years.
I can see more cruise line dropping the formal night but it is popular with certain crowd, plus picture opportunities (and revenue for the ship).

Just returned from our Alaskan cruise on the island princess. I had read so much conflicting info on the formal attire night. I hauled 2 formal dresses and a suit for my husband in our luggage. Boy was I surprised. Many women wore slacks and I saw men with polo shirts, suits and tuxes. Anything goes really. During the day and at dinner the other nights the dress was jeans and sandals. HAve a blast!
