St Lucia Trip Ideas

Hi,

This would be our first trip to St Lucia and I had a few questions:

1. We have a 4 yr old toddler, is St Lucia kid friendly for the most part?
2. We really like renting a vacation rental for our trips. Does St Lucia have good vacation rental options?
3. Any recommendations on we should look to rent a vacation rental on the island -so that we are central to most places?
4. Is it safe to drive around and rent a car in St Lucia?
5. We would ideally look to spend a full week on the island. Is there enough to do and enjoy on the island for an entire week?

Thanks

Maybe this will help:

1) St. Lucia is as "kid friendly" as most any other Caribbean Island (after all, locals have children of their own) but if you are expecting special "kiddie amusement parks, play areas and dedicated activities then you'll be disappointed. Suffice to say unless you stay in a resort that has an organized children's program YOU will be your child's main source of entertainment.

2) Yes, you'll find a wide variety of rental homes, villas and condos around the island. Do a google search using such topics as "Rental Villas on St. Lucia", St. Lucia Vacation Condos", etc. and you'll find dozens of helpful links. Also, go to the St. Lucia Forum on TripAdvisor and click on the "Vacation Rentals" link at the top of the St. Lucia Forum home page - you'll find listings and hundreds of reviews for many, if not all, of the rental units on the island.

3) St. Lucia is a relatively big island (268 sq. miles in area) and is 17 miles long and 14 miles wide. It has about 100 miles of coastline, two major airports (one in the north and one in the south) and is divided into about 10 or 11 different parishes (areas) and has a population of about 188,000 (a 1/3 of which live in or around the Castries (the island's Capital). Things are pretty speed out around the island so there is no "one central place"

4) While it is safe to rent a car and drive around the island, you should know the roads are very narrow, twisty and because of the mountainous terrain some timid drivers will find the roads a bit intimidating. It can take almost 2 hours to drive from the northern end of the island to the southern end.

5) Depending on your interests, there is quite a lot to see and do on the island - you can't see it all in a week.

Thanks. This is very helpful.

Is it overall safe in St Lucia? Any areas you would suggest we avoid? Or any recommendation on which area to pick a vacation rental in?
