Vancouver to Vancouver island

We plan to go from the Vancouver airport to the whisler for a few days and then to Vancouver island.I have not looked into ferry travel yet but assume that is what we will do. after our visit on the island we will return to Vancouver for a couple of days and then fly home from there. Not sure if we need s car in Vancouver . Is it best to take the car we will have rented to go to Whistler on the ferry or drop and then rent another car on the island? Thanks,

Despite having done this loop a few times I always ask myself the same questions. I think surely there must be a smarter way to handle the rental car, the ferries, the time in Vancouver. But in the end we do what you have set out, though usually in the opposite direction (Vancouver Island first then to Whistler. But that is usually in the summer.)

The one way cost for the car to the island is about $60 Can or $50 US so I doubt trading cars would be worth the hassle. You might think of taking the ferry back from Nanaimo (Duke Point) to Tsawwassen, which is south of the Vancouver airport. You could then return the car back to the airport and take the Skytrain into the city if it takes you anywhere near your hotel. The Skytrain takes 25 minutes from the airport to the Vancouver waterfront. Very clean and pleasant.

This is good information. Is it not necessary to have a car in Vancouver? Would also take the ferry to Nanaimo when going to the island?

Yes you would take the ferry to Nanaimo, but from Horseshoe Bay if you are coming from Whistler. A BC ferry map should make it clearer:

The only time we have a car in Vancouver is when we want to get somewhere outside the city - Grouse Mountain or the Capilano Suspension Bridge. You might want to figure out what you want to see and then determine how helpful a car would be.
