Halifax/PE in 6 nights

We arrive in Halifax at 630 am and plan to stay in the downtown harbor area the whole day. Would 12-14 hours be enough time to take everything in? Citadel, pub, museum, perhaps a harbor tour.

Day two we go to Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, and Peggy's cove. Stay the night.

Next day travel to Pictou and Angtionish. Stay the night.

Next day take Ferry to PEI and stay there two nights.

That leaves us with one night on our way back from PEI over Confederation Bridge. Was thinking of staying in Wolfville. WOuld go to luckett for late lunch, Halls Harbour, etc. Then back to Halifx the next day with flight home leaving at 730 pm.

Does this sound liek a good plan? Or should i miss wolfville and spend last night in halifax?
'Thanks in advance,
nancy

Hi Nancy118,

One day is not enough to take in all Halifax has to offer, but one day is the usual amount of time for the quick look-see that most tourists give to the city and to do what you suggest. So, I see no issue as most visitors are anxious to get out of the city to other locales. If I were to pick one museum in addition to the Citadel, it would be the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (possibly a better choice in case of rain). If it's nice out, I think I'd spend my time in the Public Gardens or Point Pleasant Park instead.

I've never been to Wolfville or Pictou, so can't comment on that part. Overall, your plan looks fine to me with its focus on PEI although if you've never been to Cape Breton Island, you may want to investigate going there since you'll be so close in Antigonish, although it would probably mean dropping PEI with your time restrictions. I like both PEI and Cape Breton, so I could do it either way, but some here have stated finding PEI disappointing. PEI is interesting for its red soil, rolling farmland, great cycling, seascapes and is a beacon for Anne-of-Green-Gables lovers but the topography doesn't have that dramatic beauty like Cape Breton.

Have fun deciding! Daniel

You will probably go back to Halifax after visiting Peggy's Cove. The visit at Peggy's Cove will probably take an hour. If you go to Peggy's Cove first, then Mahone Bay and Lunenburg, you can cut across the Province to Kentville. This drive probably takes an hour. From Kentville you can have a lobster lunch at Hall's Harbour. Then visit Wolfville, Grand Pre and off to Halifax, Pictou and Antigonish. Pictou is very historic with a replica of the Hector which brought Scottish settlers to NS. There is not much in Antigonish except the University, St. Francis Xavier or St.FX as the locals call it. From Pictou you can take the ferry to PEI.

Forgot to add that NorthwestMale would want you to stop in Moncton after coming off the Confederation Bridge on the way to Halifax. You will then see Hopewell Rocks outside of Moncton. See Bay of Fundy by madi in this forum.

LOL - I don't care if you stop IN Moncton

(though I once had a $3 salad there, at time tiny spot across from Tidal Bore Park, which was so awesome for $3 that I had to take a photo of it)

But I definitely want you to pass-through Moncton and visit Hopewell Cape since fate puts you in that area.

And as to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic... I, uh, wanted it to be more...

The Titanic-related stuff was fine, but it kiiiiiiiiiiinda felt like they needed to go some to augment Titanic-related stuff with enough other stuff to comprise a museum. (admittedly it has been a while...)

Re: Harbor Tour... I think just a round-trip on the pedestrian ferry over to Dartmouth, maybe without even exiting the boat, could be sufficient.

Now, back to that last day/night:

At any rate, project the exact date of your path over the Confederation Bridge... and then use this tide table to consider the tide times at Hopewell Cape:

http://www.tides.gc.ca/eng/station?sid=170

Sometimes the tide times (2 per day) just don't suit you.

But sit at home there, in the den, by the computer, and envision yourselves awakening on PEI, with intentions of heading off the island over the bridge at X o'clock... can you then get to Hopewell Cape, NB at or reasonably near to LOW tide in what remains of that day?

This isn't like a movie, or a ball game, which offers a deadline for missing the start... but, uh, incentive is much greater in the area of missing the whole window of opportunity (for getting down on the beach and walking around).

As for Wolfville, I wish it wasn't so relatively awkward to reach... and I think were it me, leaving PEI (and then definitely going to Hopewell Cape)... I would trek back toward Halifax via Parrsboro and along the shore toward Truro.

You could put your last night/hours in Halifax to good use, while by then having the benefit of sensing how best to allocate your time remaining.

Thank you for all your replies! I strongly considered Cape Breton, but we have two teenage girls (16 and 15) and given that we only have 6 nights I think they would prefer some beach time on PEI. Plus, driving Confederation Bridge is something we really want to experience. I did change my itinerary and will go to Hopewell Cape to see the low tide instead of Wolfville, travel back to Halifax via Parrsboro and spend the last night in Halifax as suggested, as I too agree that one day there is not enough time. We leave land-locked Alberta in a few days.....so excited!!!

I recently saw more of Alberta than I ever had before (especially in one sitting... and I had fun the whole time.

(side thought: have the teen girls pool their money and pay the toll on the Confederation Bridge)

I am sure that Hopewell Cape will be most dramatic in suggesting the uniqueness and power of the Fundy tides... even to teens who may not have quite the long tolerance of such a thing. (I might even urge/inspire/push/pull/drag them to the Tidal Bore in Moncton so that the realities of rivers turning around and FLOWING UPSTREAM might sink into their understanding)

That, too, is all about timing...

For Hopewell Cape, you just need to get there near to low tide... For the Tidal Bore, you want to be there AT the moment that the river's flow turns around.

(those in a perfect world can get back to Hopewell Cape at high tide to see the vast difference - but some don't have the patience for it)

Have fun on your trip!
